Hello Honey Lovers!

So FINALLY it looks like Spring is not far off now! Here in Oxfordshire, the weather over the last few days has been great, the sun has been out, and flowers are beginning to appear – and the best thing is that the hives have started to get active!

The bees are taking full advantage of this weather, and they are out and about en masse, getting their various housekeeping jobs done, collecting any early-season nectar they can find, and generally ‘stretching their wings’. As a beekeeper, seeing them thriving gets us excited about the season ahead. Also, seeing them out in such numbers is always good, as it is still too early to inspect inside the hives, so seeing them doing well helps allay any fears.

All the winter jobs have been done now, so we are ready to go! Hive supers and frames have been cleaned and sterilised, anything that needed fixing or refurbishing has been sorted, and the bees have had their varroa treatment so they’re strong and healthy. Our newest apiary site is standing by for new arrivals once we can start doing splits, and we’ve also prepared another small site that will be used as a quarantine apiary for any swarms we are called out to during the season. Being able to isolate them will give us a chance to check and treat for disease before we move them to one of our main sites.

Also, the big news is that in the next few weeks, we are building a new honey room, which will give us more space so that we can upgrade our extraction equipment and streamline the whole operation. We’ll document the process as we go and keep you all updated. There will be new products too, so stay tuned.
